Sos Rosarno: the journey just and decent of oranges from the field to the table
Oranges, lemons and mandarins for a total of 200kg of citrous fruit. This is the very first order of this season from the EPG in Via della Viola (Perugia) made directly to Sos Rosarno. And with this very first order the EPG joins in with the local regional network in support of the association. SOS Rosarno was launched in 2011 and after the 2010 upraising of migrant workers, by a group of small farmers and activists based in the Gioia Tauro Plain, Calabria, Southern Italy. The idea was to sell organic citrus fruits through short self-organized supply chains, essentially based on Solidarity Purchase Groups, in order to allow producers to pay migrant workers according to the law, to receive a fair remuneration, to guarantee healthy and affordable food to consumers, to protect the integrity of the environment.
SOS Rosarno clarifies, on one side, the strategies of alternative economy and the new social alliances implemented in order to challenge those conditions which impoverish small producers and let migrant farmworkers be exploited and become the target of racism in many Italian countrysides. It explores, on the other side, the development of a new peasant civilization as alternative to the current economic and environmental crises, in terms of de-commodification of nature and labour, construction of a convivial democratic society, transition from monoculture to food sovereignty.
We have read, watched and listen on 28th of October during the multiplier event for SENTIM, the story of resistance and resilience of Suleman Diara a former “bracciante” turned social entrepreneur and protagonist of the 2010 up-raising in Rosarno. Rosarno reflects back the problems we have created for ourselves with a model of agricolture production and distribution, which kills local and small farm holders and producers from the very countries the migrant workers come from: Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Niger, and generally from Sub Saharan Africa..
The Ethical Purchasing Group delivery day is on every Wednesday at 7:00pm at Braccia Rubate in Via Cartolari, 4 Perugia.
